SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is a an FDA approved alternative to intravenous ketamine that must be delivered at a certified SPRAVATO® treatment center. Current research indicates that it provides an important secondary approach to a significant number patients who may have exhausted more traditional means of managing treatment resistant depression and suicidal ideation. Although it is likely that there are multiple mechanisms at play scientists believe that esketamine works by modulating the activity of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and is believed to work differently than currently available oral antidepressants.
