What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured mental health treatment program that provides a higher level of care than weekly therapy but does not require overnight stays. IOP typically involves group therapy, individual therapy, and psychoeducation sessions scheduled several times per week, usually totaling nine to twelve hours per week.

Who Benefits from IOP?

IOP is well-suited for individuals who are experiencing significant mental health symptoms but are stable enough to live at home and manage daily responsibilities. It is commonly used for depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, and mood disorders. IOP may be recommended as a step-down from inpatient care or as an alternative to hospitalization.

What Happens in IOP?

A typical IOP day includes group therapy sessions focusing on evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT, or mindfulness. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled regularly to address personal goals. Family therapy and medication management may also be incorporated depending on individual needs.

Duration of Treatment

Most IOP programs run for four to eight weeks, though duration varies based on clinical progress and individual needs. The goal is to provide intensive support while equipping individuals with skills to maintain progress after program completion.

Is IOP Covered by Insurance?

Many insurance plans cover IOP when it is deemed medically necessary. Our team will work with you to verify your benefits and navigate the authorization process before treatment begins.
