ERP - Exposure and Response Prevention

What is ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy.  The main concept behind ERP is to expose the person to the thoughts, images, objects, and situations that make them anxious or trigger their OCD compulsions. The exposure is done in a controlled and gradual manner. Response Prevention part of the therapy involves making a conscious choice not to perform a compulsive behavior once the anxiety or obsession has been triggered. This helps the individual learn that they can tolerate the anxiety and that the anxiety will eventually decrease on its own without the compulsive behavior.
