What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a medication originally used for anesthesia but has been found to provide rapid relief from depression and suicidal thoughts.

How it works:

Ketamine works  by binding to receptors in the brain that increase the amount of a neurotransmitter called glutamate. Glutamate is then released, and it triggers a cascade within the brain that affects mood, thought patterns, and cognition. Additionally, ketamine is thought to help regenerate synaptic connections between brain cells that are damaged by stress and depression.

Our Approach

At TAC we offer ketamine infusions and ketamine assisted CBT as an adjunct treatment options for patient with treatment resistant depression or acute suicidal thoughts or actions. Although intravenous ketamine has not been FDA approved, current research indicates that it provides an important secondary approach to a significant number of patients who may have exhausted more traditional means. Although it is likely that there are multiple mechanisms at play, scientists believe that ketamine works by modulating the activity of a brain chemical called glutamate. This chemical then stimulates the growth of new synapses in that brain that help alleviate depressive symptoms. Although ketamine is not a treatment for everyone, it has been a life changing option for many. By coming to The Anxiety Center, you can be sure that you or your loved one will receive compassionate and effective care from experts committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcome.

What is Esketamine?

Esketamine is a nasal spray derived from ketamine and specifically approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression and for depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation or behavior. It is used under clinical supervision and is part of a broader treatment plan that includes a traditional antidepressant.

Our Approach

At The Anxiety Center we offer intranasal esketamine an adjunct treatment options for patient with treatment resistant depression or acute suicidal thoughts or actions. SPRAVATO® (esketamine) is an FDA approved alternative to intravenous ketamine that must be delivered at a certified SPRAVATO® treatment center. Current research indicates that it provides an important secondary approach to a significant number patients who may have exhausted more traditional means of managing treatment resistant depression and suicidal ideation. Although it is likely that there are multiple mechanisms at play, scientists believe that esketamine works by modulating the activity of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and is believed to work differently than currently available oral antidepressants. Although esketamine is not a treatment for everyone, it has been a life changing option for many. By coming to The Anxiety Center, you can be sure that you or your loved one will receive compassionate and effective care from experts committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcome.
